Do you want to change the world for a young deafblind student?  Do you want to make their lives easier at school, and allow them to feel more included, accepted, welcomed?  Do you want to give them the best opportunity to learn, and hope for the future?

Thanks to funding from Thomas Pocklington Trust and ScottishPower we have the opportunity to work with Anglia Ruskin University to develop a research programme to understand how deafblind students are educated in the UK.  We know that deaf students generally leave school one whole grade lower than their hearing counterparts.  But we still know very little about students who are deafblind.

This is a pioneering programme that hasn’t been conducted in the UK before, and we need someone with a background in education, who understands the barriers and challenges that teachers, parents and students face.  This programme will allow us to work collaboratively with Local Authorities, Education Depts, SEND teams, QTVI’s and QTHI’s.  This is an opportunity to create an education programme that is appropriate for those with sight and hearing impairments.

Every day is different at Deafblind UK! Working for Deafblind UK is flexible and family friendly. We support a healthy work-life balance; we know that you have a life outside of work and so your working hours can be flexible. From the moment you join us, you will be fully supported by your line manager and the wider team. We encourage professional development and continuous learning.

This role is 22 hours per week, at a salary of up to £25k pro rata.  You will also get a generous annual leave allowance and access to our staff benefits system, Perkbox.  It is initially a one year project, however we do hope to increase the contract, funding allowing.

Schools Liaison Officer

We support people who have combined sight and hearing loss which affects their access to information, mobility, and communication. We help them to live with their condition and to build their confidence and independence.

Deafblindness affects everyone in different ways. Some people might have mild sight and hearing loss whereas others can’t see or hear anything. It can be isolating and lonely and can lead to mental health issues - but it’s far more common than many people realise. Around 400,000 people are affected by sight and hearing loss in the UK.

And most importantly a supportive network of colleagues that will be there throughout your journey with Deafblind UK!
